In Kerry: Best Driving Adventure

Kerry brings back memories of when I was small, when the drive used to take six hours and the rain would hammer down on the window and all I could see were my fathers eyes in the rear view mirror. It was always happy, always quiet, so much green. I tried to make friends with cows and definitely made friends with dogs and my mother gave me the worst fringe possible. I like those memories but the seem so long ago now.

So I decided I wanted to be back there, back in the memories, so I went. Here are some photos that I took on a two day driving adventure.

phoebegill160915052PhoebeGill160915038-2.jpgI walked around Dingle town in the evenings, I didn’t want to go to a pub so I just listened to music and walked around.

I walked up a street and a memory hit me. We’d just been in a pub and my mother, sister and I were going back to the house, when an old man stopped us and was speaking Irish to my mother. I was small so I wasn’t paying attention and messing with my sister, wondering when my mum would stop chatting so we could go. That’s it, one small snippet of a day. It’s now the most touristy bit of Dingle with more shamrocks than a field but it’s so nice to have a memory come back after over a decade of being away.phoebegill160916058I don’t have the memories of this place, just the photos. Somehow the photos make me feel like I remember being there but I don’t know if thats true. Photos are tricky like that.phoebegill160916226phoebegill160916260This is the first time in a long time I didn’t take just the touristy shots of a place. This is what I want to take more of. This feels better, this feels like it used to. I hope you enjoyed my trip down memory lane. Kerry is the perfect place to make memories so go and make them.

In Dublin: Dublin Bay Cruises

Dun Laoghaire, the place where my 14 year old self would spend most of my time and too much money on white hot chocolates. The sea front is always a busy spot, on a weekend, the pier will be packed with people but it’s also one of the three locations where you can catch a boat trip with Dublin cruises. phoebegill160723031There are many different options to choose from from Dun Laoghaire to Howth, from Howth to the City Centre and many other variants, if you want to get full details check out their website! phoebegill160723884I went on the Howth to the Dun Laoghaire tour, it takes about an hour and has a commentary on Dublin bay and the Islands off Dublin, it’s really interesting information that gives you a greater understanding of our coastline. If you are more into the cruise side of boating there is a bar downstairs to enjoy a beverage! The trip from Howth to Dun Laoghaire cost €22. phoebegill160723898I really enjoyed this boating excursion, although I do enjoy any boat adventure. The sea is my favourite part of Dublin, the coastline is so beautiful that seeing it from a different perspective is gorgeous. This trip in the height of summer would be perfect but if you happen to go on a typical Irish day, it is still beautiful.

In Wicklow: The Perfect Weekend Outing

The weekend has arrived, you want to move but also eat great food. I recommend the Greystones to Bray walk, this is an easy long walk that is a great way to spend a day shaking off the past week and then treating yourself afterwards in a great restaurant.phoebegill160801990This coastal walk is gorgeous, from the Dublin coast you can see Bray but the Greystones cliffs are hidden so it’s really nice to see a different side of Wicklow. You follow the dart line all the way to Bray and it really is a walk for all ages, I saw every age group on this path so it’s fun for the whole family.phoebegill1608011010Once you are finished your long walk you deserve a treat! So even though you have to walk along the Bray promenade and your feet may be a bit tired, walking the extra way to Dockland N°8 is a must! Just be warned you might have to wait a little bit but there is a pub next door to rest your feet and grab a drink. phoebegill1608011034Once again, as my test, I chose the eggs Benedict and it was oh so delicious, with perfect eggs and spiced ham, I also liked the wings and they have sweet baked goods that are always a must after a good two hour walk! phoebegill1608011037I had such a nice day getting out in the fresh air and then having really yummy food! I definitely recommend you do both of these things on one of your days off. It’s a great combination, so enjoy!

In Kilkenny: St Canice’s Round Tower

Do you want to go to an attraction that makes your knees buckle and is way too cramped? Than St Canice’s round tower is for you! It costs €3 to go up and can only hold 12 people at a time. There is a commentary as you ascend the tower, with history and quippy comments. It quite funny!
phoebegill160827151Be warned this is definitely not something everyone can do. The stairs are steep and it’s very much single file, you have to time it right so there aren’t lots of people on the stairs as there isn’t much room on each floor.

The views from the top are worth it though, there is a 360 degree view of Kilkenny and if you go on a sunny day it will be beautiful! There is a combined ticket with the cathedral for €6. There’s not much else to say on this but I do think you should try it at least once. It’s fun when you at safely outside on some flat ground. Give it a try! phoebegill160827152

In Kilkenny: Dunmore Caves

I get the pleasure of going to Kilkenny because my friend is from there and we do something new every time I am down. This time was somewhere we’d both wanted to do for a while, the Dunmore Caves. A beautiful and interesting site, it was a pleasure to go and see it.  phoebegill160827122-2Like with most OPW sites, entry to the caves is €4 but come just before the hour because that is when the guided tour starts. There is also a video and information in the visitors centre to enjoy before the guided tour so allow time for that.phoebegill160827130-2The cave has an amazing history, of vikings and a massacre. Not only is there a really interesting story to the cave but the formations are really impressive and each chamber is geologically beautiful!  phoebegill160827142It’s a small site but impressive none the less. The tour lasts an hour and is so interesting, I would definitely do it again. For more information check here. Is it really only accessible by car, here are the coordinates N52.7341,  W7.2477.

In Dublin: Blas Cafe

Have a fact before we start the post. A Blaa is a flowery roll/bap from county Waterford in Ireland. It is usually had a breakfast time with your usual fry. Typically I would have one if I was down for a family funeral. They are a simple yet glorious thing.

When I heard that we would be having our InstaMeet here is was immediately intrigued and excited to try somewhere new. Bla’s Cafe is located  on King’s Inn Street, at the side of Cineworld cinema off Parnell Street. It has a very independent feel about it, it’s the perfect location for Sunday brunch. PhoebeGill160709327So as my control meal I always choose the eggs Benedict, unfortunately it was way too hot to test their coffee but the eggs Benedict was perfect. The eggs were runny, the ham was delicious, there was just enough sauce, which is crucial to the dish and there were roast potatoes that went perfectly with it. They also provide free water which is alway a plus. Check out their menu here. PhoebeGill160709307Blas is located in The Chocolate Factory, which is a space for people to sell their creations, there is jewelry, cakes, art work, crafts and other lovely things. It’s a real collective shared space and has such a nice feel to it. I definitely recommend you check this place out and it is so close to the cinema you could grab brunch and a movie to make the perfect weekend outing. PhoebeGill160709342A big thanks to Ramona for making this wonderful gathering happen. Check out her photos they are amazing!
