In Croatia: 16 hours in Zadar

I thought Zadar would make a good first stop on my trip of the Dalmatian coast. There is not much to do here so in theory you can do the entire old city in just a few hours. I found an apartment just behind the promenade and it was the perfect location for what I wanted to do.

So what are the things I did in Zadar?

PhoebeGill150614035-2Well first stop was the promenade, I love being by the water and Zadar has a feature that celebrates the sea. The walk is easy and very nice to stroll. The entire old town is accessible from this walk. I didn’t have any plans on what to see or what I wanted to do so it was all a nice surprise.PhoebeGill150614064-3At the end of the promenade is the very lovely Sea Organ, I have no photos because they are just some very simple steps that lead into the sea, it’s quite unassuming until you walk closer to it. Then the sounds start to form into a pattern until you are sitting there for an hour, watching the sunset, feeling utterly calm watching and listening to the waves.  Definitely recommend sitting by the Sea Organ.PhoebeGill150614491-1Above is the Salute to the Sun, it’s partnered with the Sea Organ, it starts when the sun has set. Walking around the old town is very easy to do. It’s a very small area but it has such beautiful architecture.PhoebeGill150614724-1There are lots of coffee bars and shops down the main street, the promenade is more relaxing and unobtrusive which I liked a lot. Continuing into the centre of old town is where you will find the archaeological sites.PhoebeGill150614182-1

There is some beautiful ruins around the city, there is the Forum which is situated next to St. Donatus’ Church and St. Anastasia’s Cathedral pictured above. These sites are so integrated into the city, you can walk all around the ruins, you can touch the stones and people often sit and watch the world go by.PhoebeGill150614076-8
This is the Captains Tower in the Five Wells Square. Next to the square is a park which is a nice walk around and there is also a bar so you can have a cool drink. The park has some nice views and a relaxed vibe.PhoebeGill150614674-7

This is the Land Gate, I really liked this gate, it’s got skull stone work and was just generally a really nice find. PhoebeGill150614669-6

You can also go up onto the walls, they look out over the new city, I didn’t venture into this side of Zadar but right outside the sea gate is where you get a taxi.

Zadar is a great place to relax and take a break before moving down the coast. I definitely recommend you start here, it’s cheap, it’s small, it’s a great first stop.

Happy Travels!
